Downtown Outreach

On the second Friday of each month we rent the empty lot on Dauphin Street across from Atlantis nightclub and Cathedral Art Gallery.  We set up a stage, café tables and chairs, and a table by the sidewalk to give out free water and coffee (or depending on the weather, lemonade or ice tea), and The Message New Testaments.  We also offer people an opportunity to pray or they can fill out a prayer card and drop it in the basket.  We usually have an artist come as well, and paint during the LoDa ArtWalk hours - 6pm to 9pm.  (If you’re not familiar with the ArtWalk, all the downtown galleries are open downtown, hors d'oeuvres are served, and a good time is had by all.  It is the second Friday of each month.)  Soon after the ArtWalk ends, the nightclub crowd begins to roll in.  We stay until between 12 and 1am to reach out to these folks in the same way, plus we provide live music – a mixture of good Christian music (yes, there is some), and clean secular music.  This is a no-pressure outreach (like everything we do).  If people are interested and want to talk then we don’t miss the opportunity, but we don’t force it in any way.  We’re not there to argue and we’re sure not there to condemn.  We’re just there to share the love of Jesus in a really natural way.  Here are some ways you can help:

1.  Set up and/or tear down (the tent, table, stage, café tables, and chairs, etc.)

2.  Providing live music (classical music for LoDa hours, and good Christian music/clean secular music for part of the time between 9pm and 1am.)

3.  Manning the Table.  Again, we never pressure people.  We simply ask them if they’d like free coffee, water, or lemonade and then if they want to chat or pray, or take a New Testament, we welcome the opportunity.

4.  Sharing your artistic talent.  A person painting or sculpting, etc. draws people.  As you share the gifts God has given you, people are blessed, and often another opportunity is opened for meaningful conversation.
